FamilySignal 2011 - Late 2012
Online Child Safety Startup

While working on Aegis Data Security, the core team came to realize the need for security for social media as childhood to teen utilization of social media became more pervasive.  Founded in March 2011, I took on the role of Lead UI/UX developer for the C#/MVC platform throughout FamilySignal as well as the responsibility to profile potential partners and product strategies aided in the creation of business materials and presentations, including printed media.  I also produced documentation and managed tech demos for high profile companies while looking for software partners.

Over the next few months while in a lull in Aegis Data Security efforts, we put together an MVP and launched it onto the market.

  • Launched with Facebook and Twitter support.
  • Allowed parents to link these accounts to FamilySignal to detect potentially bad content.
  • Utilized Bayesian Filtering to avoid false positives on triggers, similar to spam detection.

Future plans ranged from detecting mood of the child based upon their posts (sentiment analysis) to detecting nudity percentages in photos in an effort to disallow certain photographs.

FamilySignal still exists, pivoting to a different business model but still maintaining the same direction of keeping youth safe.
